New reviews from Finland by -Jiituomas, Kuolleen Musiikin Yhdistys.

Die Striche - Schlafe ein
One echoing sound, a distant clanging and very small buzzes. On one track the dominant sound is water, on another it's bursts of noise, on yet another it's drones. And so on. That about sums up the essential elements of this album by Die Striche, excluding Die Vergangenheit, which contains a not very impressive layer of constant sound, and the last track, Der schwarze Traum von der Erschiessung des Gedachtnisses. The musical style of the album is somewhere between electro-acoustic, old school ambient and noise-ambient, without any soundscape-like qualities or even the creation of moods. Technically speaking the music is well made and has lots of nicely functioning ideas. Nevertheless, it leaves a hollow feeling: every track, as well as the album, is far too often just a series of cleverly used pieces of sound, not something that feels like a whole. The only exception as far as quality is concerned is the 14-minute track Entstellt, but material similar - and far superior - to it has already been produced by artists like Ahasverus. Yet I must still admit that there are many very good pieces scattered throughout the album: good sounds, good structures, nice moods. All that is needed is a way to make them function together, and then something very good may emerge out of this basis.

Paracore - Createrased
This internet-distributed debut ep by the Russian project Paracore can be best described as horror ambient. It a set of haunting sound-spaces created through very minimalist means and without any big soundscapes, sometimes accentuated by simple yet pretty melodic parts. This particular representative of such a nowadays rather ordinary style of dark ambient did not really impress me during the first couple of listens, but on the third try a few of its parts, especially the New Risen Throne -like Ego [Infected], started to ring in my head in a pleasant way.
On the other hand Tactical Jamming (Experimental), which combines the aforementioned elements to a machine-made military drum, remains just a badly executed good idea. Regardless of all this, there is so much innovative and original stuff present that paying attention to this artist's works in the future will probably be worthwhile. So is checking out at least the aforementioned Ego [Infected] and the from-promising-to-just-screaming-chaos going end track, von den hinterweltlern.

"The era of the world's humanitarian-oriented order is dramatically closing to it's end in front of our eyes. The question of reforming the views about further development of the living matter on our planet is to be discussed now. A time has come for a new society, which evolved to replace the old one. We are talking about socialization of the mind. About a new society, where the leading role is given not to the living being, which becomes just a production facility, but for the actual unit of the noosphere, the units of the thought. We resolutely deny the abstraction of the term "thought". Now it's not just a word, meaning the phenomenon unseen by man & acknowledged in being only by it's material effects, but a complex concept meaning a new type of matter, & a living & reasonable matter, which holds the future of the very concept of our civilization..."

New year we start with artist from Russia - Paracore.

Paracore was created by Constantine Knerik in the late summer of 2006. Here you can see the first album of this projekt with its own conception of the sound and emotional constituent. The "Createrased" describes world of angst, ghost-errors and existential researches, but with the ways of dark-industrial-ambient music and noise elements.

Paracore - Createrased

"You can hold me & complain about dying if you want.
I'd like to do the same to you.
What are we to do?
What possible chance do we have in a world of
designer ideas and advertised truths?
Are we best left to play with the wolves in
our nightime?
Alone with the right kind of need but
the wrong kind of want."
anno birkin.

6 tracks, over 32 min of music.

New Year with new reviews from Finland.

Tankist - Vizij
This internet-published album by Latvian artist Tankist contains a broad spectrum of different styles in post-industrial music. It starts with traditional dark ambient ("ess") that coils towards a slow organ near the end. Following that are things like slowly bubbling drones ("nomierinies"), booming factory sounds ("tur pat", the clearly best track on the album) and MZ.412-style brutal percussion electronics ("vot vot"). A similar sense of "recognizability" goes on until the end, even as the styles themselves change. There are nevertheless some brilliant pieces included, such as the beginning of the track "tur". At is clear that the person behind Tankist, Janis Mihejevs, is a talented artist who both knows his chosen field and is able to create something new and innovative within it. Unfortunately that goal is present on this album more as observable potential than as finished ideas, for the ground tread upon here is so familiar and lacking in surprises. Yet, despite that, all of the tracks are fine and enjoyable pieces.

Megatone - Eden
Megatone's extremely fascinating online-ep is filled with non-rhythmic ambient made out of sound pieces, with next to no noticeable structure. Throughout the record, emphasis is clearly on echoing space and producing a sensation of otherness, not on "composition" in the traditional sense, even though there is a feel of everything being definitely pre-planned and thought out. There's a layer of sound, upon which take place beeps and waves executed with a wonderful production quality. Take the sound-world of "traditional", non-dark ambient, the clinical feel of laptop music and the unexpectedness of smart noise, and you get something like this. Especially with headphones, this ep is a very powerful experience, despite definitely being something one does not want to play repeatedly at home. Sometimes it travels to very annoying directions, yet that too works as a part of the whole - though not necessarily as individual tracks. I must note, though, that at least to me Eden completely failed to convey its supposed theme of paradises from different cultures, because it moves in similar tones throughout the way.
This is very fine material that constantly feels as if it were building up to something massive while actually never doing so.

Invector - VIUM 2006
Invector's gloomy ambient made with its rather modest scale of sounds left me very confused. It is simultaneously very effective and very boring. It can be best described as drone-like (though actually nearly completely drone-less!) dark ambient. While not containing definite high or low points, there are many pretty sections along the way, parts that are not disturbed by the material's simplicity. Especially track number five (all of the pieces are nameless) is a fine example of how powerful moods can be created with even minuscule effects. This is not an easy album to approach, for its repetitiveness becomes irritating quite easily. Yet, on the other hand, so do several classics of the field such as "Heresy" by Lustmord or Nurse With Wound's "Soliloquy for Lilith". So if that kind of ambient is your thing, this album is definitely worth checking out. It is, after all, completely free.

New review to our release Ahasverus - The destiny of Fabian Kazmierski

" According to Ahasverus' own description, this "interlude" tells with instrumental means the story of a farmer pursued by unknown entities. This time the chosen musical style is closest to an ambient-influenced modern classical that also contains some spicing from other genres. The result is clearly far easier to approach than the artist's earlier works, and is a lot like a movie soundtrack in mood. It flows very nicely, in a way where there is no need to differentiate between tracks, and is pleasant to listen to.

That, however, is also this album's problem: its apparent simplicity is so dominant that even an experienced listener does not note its actual nuances, letting the music simply glide along as a background track. This results in a beautiful, yet easily forgotten whole. It is without a doubt worth downloading, though. All one needs to do is listen to the best part, "Epilogue", to see how high-quality material this nevertheless is. "

New review to our release Aethere - Pulvis Et Umbra Sumus

" Protoplazma puts out Pelvis et umbra sumus, superb dark ambient. The sound stays in a constant shade and follows this one specific mood throughout the duration of the album. It's full of echos, whispers, mechanical slow beats, spoken words and other various additional sounds; all merging into each others to pump up the atmosphere. The gloom lies behind the soundscapes of Aethere, not comforting, not frightening but somewhere in between, neutral somehow, letting your own feelings waver towards what suits it best. Driven by the music through different and multiple places and times, as a vampire, eternal, I watch the hands of this man mold my imagination. "

New release from young and talanted artist from Latvia - Tankist aka Janis Mihejevs

Tankist - Vizij

Album " Vizij " is very personal for artist, as all time the artist was engaged album he has carried out in full solitude with himself and with all world around him. Asking questions and trying to answer them. Dialogue with himself. This album is small echo. Full of misunderstanding. Full of bewilderment. Full of hatred. Full of happyness.

12 tracks, over 55 min of music.

New review to our release Ahasverus - The destiny of Fabian Kazmierski

Ahasverus brings us quite an engaging work of incredible adventure and experimentation with “The Destiny of Kazmierski.” Playing like a musical narrative to a soundtrack from an Ingmar Bergman film, this album transcends the conventions traditional dark ambient. An elegant story is told through the use of simple yet engaging sounds.

Fabian Kazmierski was an enigmatic Polish farmer whose very existence is in question. Musically, the album successfully tells the tale of his fearful flee from military forces in World War I. This album is his voyage.

The opening track “Overture” begins with the faint sounds of whispers, as if they were planting the seed of Kazmierski’s paranoia. And soon the sounds of strings creep in, thus beginning the journey. The album continues to unravel symphonically and somewhat minimally. Ahasverus masterfully composes the string section to some lost orchestra. A fair balance between the bowed instruments and truly harrowing ambient moments provide for a nearly perfect juxtaposition of tone.

The production quality is top notch. My only complaint is that the strings occasionally sound a bit too synthetic for my tastes, but this is a rare occurrence. The majority of the orchestral sounds are actually quite organic, especially in composition.

In a genre plagued by overpopulation and pedestrianism, it is quite refreshing to find a piece of work willing to break out of the status quo and go for something as original as “The Destiny of Fabian Kazmierski.” Actually I’d say this album is nothing short of a masterpiece. Ahasverus’ sounds are quite cinematic and speak clearly to the created narrative. With every orchestral sample, with every resonant ambience, I can feel the tale of Fabian Kazmierski. From his fear to his tranquility, to even the mysteriousness of his very existence, it is all there. This, ladies and gentlemen is a true work of art.

New review to our six release Ahasverus - The destiny of Fabian Kazmierski

"Ahasverus in The destiny of Fabian Kazmierski performs classical dark ambient in the sens that it's similar to classical music, played using strings only in such a way to bring out some ominousness. The wind comes occasionnally, merging into the music to give a more natural, soundscape-like feel. The small amount of darkness that the music carries is frequently set aside for the benefit of a more melancholic tone. The artist kept his release into its most simple form in a minimalistic approach with a reduced number of sounds. This method may seem limited but this proves the opposite in a beautiful way." "This is the first work of the Aethere project by Loki Deformis. "Pulvis et Umbra Sumus..." introduces to us five songs, which can be placed within a stylistic area close to the dark-ambient genre, more "lyric-like" than "catacomb-like". This project, even if it displays the limitations of a debut work - mostly regarding some compositional naiveties, the use of the sounds of excessively “synthetic” tone, and the presence of rhythmic parts where the sequences and the metallic sounds (hit-hat, cymbals) and percussions (for example, kettledrums) also clearly seem unnatural and synthetic – it shows the signals of a substantial creativity, ability in thinking, composing and elaborating quite complex parts, as well as capacity in conceiving and realizing in sound form interesting and potentially emotional atmospheres...."

Ahasverus - The destiny of Fabian Kazmierski

Very powerfull with feelings album, when you listen it you like in dream see what artist is trying to tell you. Interesting combinate sounds material gives you 40 minutes time to think about your destiny, what is wrong or what you have to change or what future you will see, you will fall deep in yours mind, and when you open your eyes everything will be clear.

8 tracks, over 40 min of music.
